I lived through hurricane Katrina. Katrina really hit Mississippi not New Orleans. Where as NO flooded we had entire towns gone, nothing left not even debris as it floated out to sea. I lived about 30 minutes inland and lost part of my roof, my pump house, 2 acres of fence and about 50 trees. We had no electricity for 3 months and no phone service for 6 months. I had NO clue how to survive but my father was with us and really helped out.
It’s these various promises that make playing Ark worthwhile: other survival games rely on you being satisfied with making it through the night, whereas Studio Wildcard sets you long-term goals such as ‘tame and ride a T-Rex’. Having a true sense of progression and aims make your time in Ark feel valuable, and that’s something many other survival adventures struggle with. Also, if you’re struggling with the game’s sci-fi-flavoured expansion, our Ark: Aberration tips should help.
Don’t Starve focuses heavily on crafting to make your way through life, and so much of your time is spent harvesting raw materials – just like a crafting game. But rather than crafting houses like in Rust and Minecraft, this indie game is all about the tools and contraptions you can make. The Science Machine and Alchemy Engine will become your best friends, before making way for ancient wonders and the art of magic. Like Minecraft, Don’t Starve happily embraces the mad and the mystical, and is all the more enjoyable for it.
This grim tale of endurance has become infamous for its naked men – but it’s not the size of a man’s particulars that’s impressive about Facepunch’s survival game (and we all know that doesn’t matter anyway… right?). No, it’s the forts that players are able to, ahem, erect. Rust’s strong point is construction: as you gather materials from its wilderness, you can begin to lay down a variety of items in a Sims-like manner, creating your perfect rural retreat by slotting together floors, walls, staircases, and windows.
What normal people do is go on with their lives and ignore what will happen. It is not a matter of IF but of WHEN. And WHEN it happens, they go batshit crazy and freak out and their whole world collapses. They regard preppers as crazy people, but yet when emergency strikes come knocking on their doors, even using violence to steal what they built up in their cleverness.
Remember that this pack should be prepared and stored somewhere easily accessible and rodent proof. It is also a good idea to review the contents of your pack every 6 months to ensure you have appropriate clothes packed for the season and that your gear and rations are in order. This will help you feel confident that your Bug Out Bag is ready to go at a moment’s notice!
Everyone’s needs when they Bug Out are different. So your Bug Out Bag should suit your needs. Your size/strength, number in party, where you plan to go and for how long will determine what goes in the bag. Bigger groups can share load weights. The only way to determine which bag works for you is to research and try the different sized and designed back packs. In the end, the weight you’ll be carrying may determine whether an external frame or internal frame will be best.
All told I have a stockpile of food that will last a bit ove a year and a half for the wife and I. While on the subject of how long supplies last, be sure to look into the calorie count of your meals, not just the number of servings. I found that there is a wide range of values in this. For instance, very few packages for 3 months for two people contain sufficient calories to reall sustain two people for 3 months. Most only supply 700 – 800 calories when eating only one serving per person, per meal. That’s why I’ve supplemented with a lot of extra stuff to add to the basic mealy, such as fruit, rice, beans, wheat and flour for bread.
Crafting in Conan Exiles is essentially the name of the game. There are hundreds of items available to craft, and even though it may seem a little daunting at first, the process is very intuitive. You're able to do most things right from your inventory screen with no added help, and other things are deliberately pointed out as needing other amenities to be able to craft them. As you level up, you acquire "knowledge points," allowing you to learn how to craft new things. However, one person can't possibly know how to craft everything in the game. This system is perfect for making players either raid others for the goods they need, or team up and work with people to get further in their quest for survival. See More
The most important factor that will determine the right size bug out bag is your torso size. You can measure your torso by having a friend or casual acquaintance measure the distance from the top of your Iliac Crest (hip bones) up to the bony prominence at the base of your neck (the last cervical vertebrae). Knowing the length of your torso will help you choose a bug out bag that fits comfortably.

This was a great article but I have to say that as far as fire arms go I wouldn’t suggest a .22LR. Yes the ammunition is light and yes you can carry more but in a self defense situaton a .22 isn’t an ideal round. I would suggest if it’s a rifle your looking for go with a .556 NATO or .223 because they are still light weight rounds and they would be more beneficial they are great for defense and hunting larger game. As far as hand guns go a revolver is reliable but the rounds are heavy and most of them are quite bulky a 9mm Luger would be your best bet because they are reliable and the ammunition is one of the common and available round there is so even if you run out obtaining them won’t be that difficult. Plus most full size double stack mags carry around 10-17 rounds which means more rounds before you have to reload.

My husband and I have just started prepping and I can’t read enough information on what we should be doing to prepare. Our biggest questions seem to be about where to find a safe place to go. We live in Ohio right now but plan on moving to Tennessee (Cumberland area) in 3 years. I’ve read a little about the area but I’m not really convinced this is a safe area to stay. Anyone’s thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
As we mentioned, first and foremost to being a Prepper is a mental attitude. That of “I am responsible for me”. If you are relying on the government or others to take care of you then you are a dependent of them, not an independent citizen capable of supporting themselves. And that is exactly what a Prepper is or strives to be – an Independent Citizen capable of supporting themselves. Through out the attitudes and beliefs that if something happens you’ll let others take care of you. In fact, through out the notion that nothing bad will ever happen to you – chances are extremely high that it will! Whether it’s a personal, family, neighborhood, city, state, national or world event – bad things happen every single day – dodging them all is pretty near impossible.
A bug out bag or a tactical backpack, is a large, accessible, strong, and convenient backpack that you can personalize the contents for your situation. This is a bag that you want to have ready so that you can grab it at a moment’s notice. The pack should always be packed and stored in an accessible place. You never know when you might be forced to leave your home and have to survive on only what is on your back. Not only will you need a pack you will need good quality boots as well. To help you find the best bug out bag, we have listed out some things to consider when buying.
A Bug Out Bag, also called a BOB, I.N.C.H Bag (I’m Never Coming Home Bag),Get Out of Dodge Bag (GOOD Bag), or 72 Hour Bag is usually designed to get you out of an emergency situation and allow you to survive self-contained for up to 3 days. A lot of people plan their Bug Out Bag to sustain them for much longer than that, but there is always a limit to what you can carry on your back and a 3 day target is a good place to start.
We can only survive for three hours in extreme heat or cold – and most places in the world, including most of the USA, experiences either extreme heat or extreme cold (or both in some cases) depending on the time of the year. Would you be able to survive comfortably in the dead of winter without any form of electricity or heating? Do you have a stockpile of resources that will allow you to build fires the old-fashioned way through the whole of winter? What about if you’re away from your home when something catastrophic occurs? Do you have easy access to materials to be able to improvise a shelter or tent?
We also need to figure out what kind of survival equipment we need that will make it easier for us to replenish our needs. As an example of this – we need water to survive. But no matter how much clean drinking water you store up, you’ll run out of it at some point. So we need to figure out what kind of gear we need to purify or distill our own water.
Packing a bug out bag can seem overwhelming as the task of not forgetting something important can be daunting. There are many checklists out there that will tell you the essential items you should always keep in your bug out bag. You can buy an already packed Bug out Bag, like this one here- Urban Survival Bug Out Bag, which contains essentials items like food, water, and a first aid kit. You can also check out our Bug Out Bag Checklist and personalize your bag yourself.
When loaded and put on properly, your hips should carry the bulk of your pack’s weight. Because of this, extra padding in the hip belt can make a lot of difference. However, you should also make sure the hip belt isn’t so bulky that it ends up rubbing your hip bones or ribs uncomfortably. In an ideal world, your bug out bag’s hip belt should fit comfortably between the top of your hip bones and the bottom of your lowest ribs.
Don't Starve is a classic example of "Easy to play, tough to master". The game play is very easy to learn, in fact Don't Starve doesn't really tell you how to play, you just point and click. Some items will be clickable, exploration leads to discoveries, and discoveries lead to longer survival, but death and a new game are always right around the corner. See More
I like your addition of a bug net. One thing I noticed is that the author correctly says to save space and weight to just pack a tarp. However, where I live, from late May to late September if you don’t pack bug netting, a tent with screens or plenty of bug spray you are going to be itchy, sore and tired from no sleep because you are up all night swatting mosquitoes
Many preppers are going to find themselves completely exhausted after just one day of disaster. Hiking from place to place, carrying supplies back and forth, repairing damaged roofs or windows, etc. All if it will wear you out fast if you’re not in shape. It’s easier to get in shape than you think. A half hour of power walking a day will make a huge difference.
In a genuine disaster, having a safe shelter and a stockpile of food and water is a huge advantage – but only as long as you can prevent others from forcibly taking what’s yours. When people are desperate, they’ll do anything to survive, and that includes attacking those who have the means of survival. Being properly prepared involves having the means and the will to protect yourself when necessary. Any prepper worth their salt should be armed in some way – with firearms, or at the very least non-lethal weapons or primitive weapons. Having some understanding of survival self defense is also a good idea.
was looking to bunk down were i am now but after some research found the house i live in is in the blast radius of a nuke plant and so need to locate another area but i am poor and cant acquire land of any type really . was thinking of bugging out to a state park outside of the blast radius and survive that way.. any thoughts on this? also what would be a good way to stock up supplies my BOV will be my two feet.. i know along way to hike.. but i can clear the main bast site quickly but will take the three days to clear area were food sources will be contaminated…..
We live in KY also and would like to start prepping trying to find some land right now have lived on a small farm had chickens miss it so much .We live in town now wanting to get back to the country we would like to start storeing but dont have alot of room where we are at now .I think we need to be prepared for anything nice to know someone else in ky feels the same.By the way I am married and me and my husband has 4 kids Hope you have a blessed day
Finally, we arrive at food. Basic food stockpiling is pretty straightforward – look for non-perishable food items that are nutritious, buy them in bulk, and store them in cool, dry, dark places. If you’re not sure what to buy, we have a very in depth article on the best survival foods that’s actually one of the most popular articles on this site – make sure you check that out if you’re not sure where to begin. Food stockpiling is easy – make sure you buy the right things, store them in the right way, and cycle them roughly once a year and you’ll be able to feed your family through long periods of survival conditions.
While the idea of being properly prepared for some kind of large scale crisis may seem strange to ordinary people, for those of us who’re more aware of the wider world and what’s going on in it, it seems like an obvious thing to do. It’s entirely possible that the world will keep on as normal, in which case those of us who’re well prepared will have wasted a little money and a little time on making preparations for a disaster that doesn’t happen.
You will be able to prep only at the basic level (to withstand about a week or so of unrest, Im speaking of civil unrest. Any type of chemical or nuclear attack and it is very unlikely you will not survive in an apt structure) You need two weeks of food and water–long term food storage items, not items from the local grocery store. You also should purchase a gun for each of you and take some shooting classes at the shooting range. Lastly, You need to stock up on any perscription medications you take on a regular basis, you can accomplish this by ‘losing’ a perscription every now and then and having the pharmacist replace it. You should have no less than 6 months of perscriptions even if you only have limited food and water–it can also be used to bargain with later. Best of luck to you.
For me, a walk out would be a huge barrier to overcome, and the potential for catastrophy is in all likelihood a given outcome. Vehicular Bug Out is the only option in that case, and it may not be the option we’re presented with. Bugging In, if possible, is the best option then, even if a power outage is a permanent feature. The pros still outweigh the cons.
